—

To celebrate Zwickelmania—the premier beer tourism event in Oregon–Breakside Brewery (820 NE Dekum) will debut three beers and release new bottles for the event.

Beginning at 11 AM this Saturday, the brewery will be open for tours and free samples of beer. On tap for the event will be Breakside’s American Wheat—a classic American-style ‘Hefeweizen’ with a touch of Centennial hop character, as well as two versions of a dry-hopped gin barrel-aged IPA: Citra Gin IPA and Simcoe Gin IPA. The Gin IPAs will be on draught throughout the day and will be available in very limited quantities in 750 ml bottles for take away. Breakside brewer Sam Barber, who racked the Gin IPAs over this past weekend, said “the mix of hop and juniper character is truly lovely.”

For the event, the brewery also plans to serve the rest of its specialty Lavender Fudge Stout, which was tapped earlier this week for an event at Saraveza.

Press Release:

(Escondido, CA) – Best to disregard this press release. It’s unlikely that you possess the sophistication to fathom the overwhelming gravitas of the potation it discusses. Thus, stop reading now. Hit delete and retire outside with your fizzy yellow beer. But if, by some infinitesimally minute chance, you are one of the Worthy craft beer cognoscenti and you’ve somehow surmised that you’re prepared for today’s release of Double Bastard Ale, then do proceed. With caution.

“This is one lacerative muther of an ale,” the braggadocious bottle warns. “It is unequivocally certain that your feeble palate is grossly inadequate and thus undeserving of this liquid glory… and those around you would have little desire to listen to your resultant whimpering.”

In a world full of glittery pageants and overproduced Hallmark holidays, it has become difficult to isolate what is worth celebrating, while eschewing the insipid propaganda that is spoon-fed to the masses. But rest assured, Double Bastard Ale’s annual unleashing is no such hornswaggle. Nay, it is a moment of gustatory excellence to be met with fervorous revelry and tintinnabulation.

Double Bastard Ale first graced our little blue oblate spheroid in 1998, sanctifying the one-year anniversary of Arrogant Bastard Ale. Nothing less than creating an embiggened version of the already elephantine Arrogant Bastard Ale would befit such an epochal occasion.

Double Bastard Ale is strictly for those with an unfettered predilection for bold unapologetic flavor, and it is for this enlightened minority that this annual tradition carries on today. However, for those who may have been at all frightened by this obstreperous and bombastic admonition, then please, close the dictionary you took out and hit delete now. Forget all you’ve read here of the Double Bastard Ale, and acquiesce into an insufferable purgatory of fizzy yellow nonsense. Remain one of the blissfully nescient, one of the mindless, barefoot sheeple, aimlessly wallowing in a cromulent cesspool of mediocrity. Sleep. Sleeeeeeeeeep…

Press Release:

(Bremerton, WA) – Silver City Brewery, the Kitsap Peninsula, Washington’s premier award winning brewery today announced the release of Winter Bock as their new Winter Seasonal. Winter Bock will be available at the Silver City Restaurant on draft and in 22oz bottles. Winter Bock will also be available in 22oz bottles in select grocery stores, bottle shops, bars, and on draft in select restaurants and bars around the Puget Sound. Winter Bock which will be released around mid October will take the next spot in rotation after Oktoberfest and is yet another lager in Silver City’s seasonal line-up.

“We are so excited to be releasing our Winter Bock in this capacity” says Silver City Director of Sales & Marketing Kurt Larson. “In keeping with our seasonal theme of brewing & providing lagers that not only fit the season, but are highly sessionable, we feel Winter Bock will be the perfect addition to our line-up of lagers designed to celebrate each season.”

Winter Bock Description

The weather outside may be frightful, so stay indoors & drink beer! Winter Bock’s blend of five different German and domestic malts lend a deep, rich color and mild roast character to this classic winter lager.

Just as old world brewers aged their beer in snow-covered cellars, Silver City stores Winter Bock for five weeks at near freezing temperatures. Cold conditioning makes Winter Bock the smoothest, most flavorful way we know to celebrate the winter season.

Alcohol By Volume: 7%
Hops: Nugget, Hersbrucker, Saaz
Malts: Pilsner malt, NW Pale, Munich, Caramel,
Chocolate, & Carafa
IBU’s: 22

2011 North American Beer Awards: Gold Medal Winner
2008 North American Beer Awards: Silver Medal Winner
2007 North American Beer Awards: Bronze Medal Winner
2005 North American Beer Awards: Silver Medal Winner

About Silver City Restaurant & Brewery

Silver City was started in 1996 by Co-owners Steve & Scott Houmes, and it remains a locally owned and operated family establishment. Silver City Brewery’s handcrafted beers are available at more than 100 Puget Sound area bars, restaurants, and grocery stores throughout Kitsap, Jefferson, King, and Pierce counties.

In May of 2010 Silver City opened their new production facility at 206 Katy Penman Ave. in Bremerton, WA to meet the growing demand for their beer in the retail market. The 7,600 sq. ft. facility will feature a tasting room late 2011 or early 2012.

Capital Eternal Flame is now available.

Eternal Flame is a vertically brewed beer — a portion of one year’s batch becomes a component in the following year’s version. The 2011 vintage is the seed beer for all other batches to come. Capital brewmaster Kirby Nelson started with his very popular and very robust Autumnal Fire (itself a limited-release brew), and then made a second beer, designed as an Imperial Dopplebock, with an even maltier body and higher alcohol content. These two beers were then blended to produce Eternal Flame. Nelson plans to hold back a portion of this fall’s vintage, which will then be added to a new release next year, in a process that will be repeated year after year.

In this video, Firestone Walker Brewmaster, Matt Brynildson, discusses two components going into the blend of XV Anniversary Ale: Helldorado Golden Barleywine (a new beer in itself) and Parabola Imperial Stout.

For those not keeping track, the brewery has revealed the following beers are part of XV:

Helldorado Golden Barleywine
Parabola Imperial Stout
Bravo Barrel Aged Brown Ale
Good Foot Barleywine
Velvet Merlin/Merkin Oatmeal Stout
Double Double Barrel Ale Barleywine

An educated guess on the last two coming in the next video: Abacus Barleywine (to be renamed) and Sticky Monkey Barleywine.

How many Barleywines can one brewery produce?

(Fort Collins, CO) – Quick note from Crooked Stave’s Chad Yakobson:

The Wild Wild Brett Orange bottle run was low with only 1125 bottles available. Starting Wednesday (10/5), bottles are available at Funkwerks brewery taproom.

Wild Wild Brett Orange is an unfiltered, slightly tart wild ale, fermented entirely with Brettanomyces yeast. Brewed with fresh Minneola tangelos, bitter orange peel and coriander, Orange pours a golden color delivering tropical fruit aromas and bright orange citrus flavors with a tart earthy finish. This is the second release in the Wild Wild Brett installment.

Next up is Surette our wood-aged farmhouse ale. Bottle release slated for two weeks from now…

Per an email from a Pelican Pub and Brewery spokesman, “Our version of the ‘Wee Heavy’ Scotch Ale style is set to release on October 13. This brew is literally a batch of MacPelican’s Scottish Ale brewed with half the water and twice the boiling time to create a beer with a massive malty flavor and a deep red color. The aroma hints of rich caramel, cocoa, toffee, and tropical fruit, with a full-bodied mouth feel and a velvety sweet, slightly dry finish. A robust beer with a dangerous, drinkable smoothness.”

Another piece of news on New Belgium. So far, we have been told by local news outlets that there are six locations in four cities. Asheville, North Carolina is one of them. The Asheville Brewers Alliance says that it doesn’t want New Belgium to get any incentives. After all, none of the brewery members did. At least one city council member has their back:

Davis tells Xpress that “I’d love to have New Belgium here. I don’t think it would hurt the economy particularly; it’s going to create good jobs. I’m not really in favor of incentivizing that. I think that’s an issue. They’re a well-off company, nobody incentivized Oscar Wong [founder of Highland Brewing] or anyone like that.”

Hurt the economy? It is interesting to see New Belgium portrayed as if it were a Wal-Mart-level entity. It is not as if New Belgium is in the business of selling soap at the lowest possible cost. And it wouldn’t be surprising to see a New Belgium Eastern HQ creating half of the 280 or so jobs that come out of the existing breweries in Asheville.

It’s just after dawn at the Dogfish Head brewpub in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware, where the ambition for the morning is to resurrect an Egyptian ale whose recipe dates back thousands of years.

But will the za’atar—a potent Middle Eastern spice mixture redolent of oregano—clobber the soft, floral flavor of the chamomile? And what about the dried doum-palm fruit, which has been giving off a worrisome fungusy scent ever since it was dropped in a brandy snifter of hot water and sampled as a tea?

Beer Advocate broke the news this afternoon:

The first Belgian Beer Café is tentatively scheduled to open at Newark Liberty International Airport in New Jersey in late 2011 / early 2012. Franchise / licensing projections call for the opening of approximately 60 Belgian Beer Cafés in the U.S. within three to four years.

Creneau International, one of Belgium’s premier interior design agencies, owns the Belgian Beer Café concept outright in the U.S. from Anheuser-Busch InBev, which owns the rights to all non-U.S. franchises and licenses the Belgian Beer Café concept elsewhere throughout the world. There are more than 60 Belgian Beer Cafés in about a dozen countries.

I still have a Mark McGwire baseball card collection that I started in the early 90s and wrapped up after the home run race. It is in the ballpark of 400-500 cards. Unfortunately, no one educated me as a 14 year-old (I’m now 26) about the idea of “selling high.” Today, this sorrowful memory comes back to life thanks to Oskar Blues Brewery:

HGH (Home Grown Hops) is an 8% ABV and 70 IBU Strong Ale juice with hops locally grown at Oskar Blues Hops & Heifers Farm. Our home grown, high-potency, home-run hitter is dry-hopped with Amarillo hops and then finished with a dose of Nugget & Centennial dry hopping. This farm-raised strong ale injects more HGH than the 1998 home run race.

The product, described as “Icelandic Pale Ale”, will soon be available at markets reaching 40 million consumers and the plan is to make Einstök the country’s best known export product in the next three to five years, Morgunbladid reports.

Press Release:

625 Pounds of Centennial Hops Make the Trip from the Fields to the Tank in Less Than an Hour for this Fresh Hop Beer

(Portland, OR) – BridgePort Brewing Company, Oregon’s oldest craft brewery, releases its 2011 Hop Harvest beer September 15th at the Pearl district brewpub. Last year’s Hop Harvest used 400 pounds and that number has grown exponentially – increasing to over 625 pounds of fresh Centennial hops from third-generation, family-owned Goschie Farms in Silverton, Ore.

“Last year’s Hop Harvest flew off the shelves,” exclaimed Brewmaster Jeff Edgerton. “This year, we’re trying to prepare for this demand a little more by increasing the total number of hops we pull from the fields. This beer is always a crowd favorite and evokes a subtle garden-fresh and natural citrus taste that beer drinkers crave.”

When announced by Gayle Goschie, farm head of Goschie Farms, that the crop was ripe for harvest, BridgePort’s Brewmaster, Jeff Edgerton, drove to the farm with utility trailer in tow. Armed with huge burlap sacks, the group took to retrieving the fresh Centennial hops at the farm. Normally these hops would be sent through the drier and shipped throughout the US, but the team caught the green cones prior to drying and loaded them up for the trip up north to the brewery. Within an hour, the BridgePort crew cut open the sacks and the hops were blended with a base beer that had been prepared in advance and cooled to prevent cooking off the delicate flavor profiles. In around 2-weeks, brewers will lightly filter the beer and fill kegs and 22-oz bottles with this farm-fresh brew.

“The smell of those hops is hard to explain but it definitely brings a smile to the faces of our brewers and there’s a certain energy around here when they come in. It is uniquely Oregon to be able to pull from the vines and then feed into the cold tanks in under an hour.”

BridgePort will host a Hop Harvest release party Thursday, September 15 at 5:30pm at the BridgePort BrewPub in the Pearl at 1313 NW Marshall St. Free and open to the public, attendees can be among the first to sample the new brew while supplies last and purchase a limited-edition 22-ounce bottle of Hop Harvest.

BridgePort’s Hop Harvest Stats:
IBU’s: 65 ABV: 6.5% Color: Deep Amber OG: 16.0

About BridgePort Brewing Company

Oregon’s oldest craft brewery continues to evolve from a microbrewery to a regional leader in craft brewing, while remaining faithful to its commitment to producing high-quality, innovative craft ales. The BridgePort family of ales includes IPA, Hop Czar, Kingpin, Blue Heron Pale Ale and Summer Squeeze. BridgePort Brewery is located at 1313 N.W. Marshall St. For more information, call 503-241-7179 or visit www.bridgeportbrew.com.

The reopening will also debut Tower 20 IIPA — a bolder, hoppier version of fan-favorite Tower 10 IPA. “We thought this would be the perfect event to unveil Tower 20 IIPA, so people can try them side by side,” says Paul Segura, Brewmaster, Karl Strauss Brewing Company. “We’ll be tapping Tower 20 on cask, and as a special treat, we’ll also be pouring it straight from the brewing tank.”

Press Release:

(Elkhart, IN) – After two long years of hard work, many ups and downs, Evil Genius is pleased to announce the introduction of its first beer “Good ‘n Evil.”

Are you good? Are you Evil? Either way you’re going to enjoy drinking this. A German style Kölsch, with 4.5% ABV, this is the first in a long line of session beers we’ll be bringing to the craft beer market.

Good ‘n Evil is brewed with traditional Pilsner malt as well as Weyerman Wheat malt and a small amount of Carapils. Three stages of Perle hops, and one of Tettnang lend themselves to floral and sweet aromatics. The bitterness is very slight, giving a clean crisp finish to the beer.

Good ‘n Evil is the perfect beer to sit around drinking on a lazy afternoon, a longer night session, or a simple beer over dinner. Good ‘n Evil pairs especially well with wings, Sunday afternoons, and football.

Good ‘n Evil will be on sale in both Indiana and Pennsylvania.

Malts: Pilsner malt, Pale Wheat, Carapils

Hops: Perle and Tettnang

ABV: 4.5%

(Pittsburgh, PA) – Iron City Brewing Co. today announced it soon will conduct a secondary production run for new IC Light® Mango, the first mango-flavored light beer in the United States. The additional production runs were necessary to meet the overwhelming market demand for IC Light Mango, which was introduced this summer.

“In the past, Iron City had developed a reputation as an innovative leader in the beer industry,” said Ed Lozano, president and CEO of Iron City Brewing. “With this successful launch, we are pleased to once again bring that legacy of innovation to the forefront of the industry with a wonderfully great-tasting and refreshing product.”

The IC Light Mango launch represents Iron City Brewing’s first major marketing initiative under the new ownership and management team that acquired the brewery in April 2011. It also marks the first product launch for the company in more than a decade.

“Other mango-flavored malt beverages and ales have been on the market, but we’re the first to offer mango in a light beer product,” said Jon Burdette, senior brand manager for Iron City Brewing. “It’s an ideal summer beverage – light, refreshing with a hint of exotic flavor – the right brand at the right time.

“People who are looking for a refreshing new citrus flavor in their light beer now have a terrific option that’s different from all of the other brands.”

Bar and restaurant operators throughout the distribution area for IC Light Mango report that the new product has been extremely well-received by customers.

“With a few launch parties to help push the launch of IC Light Mango, we have grown our numbers all summer,” said Jimmy Vegas, manager of Mullen’s Bar and Grill in Pittsburgh. “This product has been phenomenal this summer, and we’re excited for more new products from Iron City.”

About Iron City Brewing Company
Iron City Brewing Co. is based in Pittsburgh with brewing operations in Latrobe, Pa. Its brands are iconic throughout the Western Pennsylvania region, and its core products, Iron City Beer and IC Light, enjoy a loyal following around the world, wherever “Pittsburgh Nation” beer drinkers congregate. During the brewery’s 150-year history, it has introduced many innovations, including the twist-off cap and the snap-top can, and in 1976 it was the first brewery in the United States to produce a light beer.

BrewDog hints that the AB:07 release could be drawing closer. In addition, the brewery has created Cranachan Imperial Stout. No word at this time whether that one will make it Stateside.

The Cranachan Imperial Stout has been inspired by the famous Scottish dessert, brewed with a mountain of dark malts, loads of oats, Scottish Heather Honey, local raspberries and will be aged in whisky casks. It is destined to be an upcoming Abstrakt. The beer will be 13.5% ABV. The ingredients certainly tasted pretty spectacular. Raspberries dipped in honey, oats and cacao were a post lunch treat!

We also put Abstrakt AB:07 back into tank in preparation for packaging. This will be a 12.5% whisky cask aged imperial scotch ale. The beer was brewed on the 21st of December last year.

Port Brewing Head Brewer, Mike Rodriguez, tells all on the brewery’s new draft-only harvest beer, Port Fallbrook Homegrown Estate Pale Ale.

Beer description: “A delicious pale ale made entirely with hops grown right here in Northern San Diego County. After the hops were picked and delivered to the brewery, a number of folks showed up to volunteer to pick the fresh hop cones from the vines by hand. Even though it took several days, the results were fantastic! We only ran one batch of this beer, meaning we won’t be bottling or distributing it. As a result, your only chance to sample it will be in the brewery.”

More on hop profile, etc. in the video…

Press Release:

(Traverse City, MI) – Tired of having to choose between your favorite pumpkin beer and your favorite IPA when fall comes around? Well, fret no more. Enter the Hooligan – the new hoppy pumpkin beer from North Peak Brewing Company in Traverse City. Coming in at 5.5% ABV with 35 IBUs, Hooligan is a real treat for beer lovers – just in time for the harvest season.

“It’s no trick. This brew delivers all the spicy pumpkin goodness one could ask for, along with a kick of hops,” says brewer Ron Jeffries, who along with brewer Mike Hall bring a combined 40 years of brewing experience to their North Peak beer recipes. “Hooligan is brewed with real pumpkin and fresh spices (cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg and allspice, oh my). And, did we mention…hops? Hooligan is brimming with locally-grown hops.”

So who is this Hooligan you may ask? He is a legendary and impish figure who appears but once a year on Devil’s Night, October 30 – the night before Halloween. He lurks through the darkness, traipsing in the shadows from house to house with a rogue gait and a devilish grin on his face. This scoundrel is more mischievous than wicked, yet his reputation for mayhem is wildly known. Anyone who has woken up on Halloween morning to find their pumpkins smashed or yard toilet-papered is familiar with the antics of the Northern Michigan Hooligan.

Hooligan is available only on draft, now through October when the last pumpkin is smashed. Find it throughout Michigan and Ohio, wherever your favorite North Peak beers are sold.

The North Peak is part of Northern United Brewing Co., which also encompasses the Grizzly Peak and Jolly Pumpkin Artisan Ales craft beer brands, as well as the soon-to-be-released Civilized line of spirits. NUBC’s philosophy focuses on a dedication to conservation, inspiration and locally sustainable practices. All of the beers and spirits under these brands are produced at either the new 5600-square-foot facility on Old Mission Peninsula adjacent to Mission Table (former Bowers Harbor Inn) restaurant or at the original Jolly Pumpkin facility in Dexter.

Find NUBC products at stores, restaurants, and bars all throughout Michigan, including: North Peak Brewing Company, Mission Table and Jolly Pumpkin Brewery, all in Traverse City; Jolly Pumpkin and Grizzly Peak, in Ann Arbor.
