(Boston, MA) – In this third and final installment and last but not least, is Ben Miller, who won for his 12% Mile High Barley Wine. Miller became the first to win both the GABF Pro-Am Competition and the Samuel Adams LongShot competition in the same year since LongShot started in 2006 1996. Considering winners of both contests were announced within a couple hours of each other on the Saturday afternoon of GABF weekend, it stands to reason that Miller probably had one hell of a party thrown for him on that Saturday night.

Boston Beer Co.’s IT guy named a Longshot winner
(Boston, MA) – In my second article on the 2010 Samuel Adams LongShot beers, I’m featuring Jeremy White’s Lemon Pepper Saison. The Captain’s Chair blog was the first to provide an overview of the winners of the 1,300+ beer competition in late September. In the piece, Aaron reveals that White is actually on the Information Technology staff at the brewery.
Third time’s a charm for Samuel Adams Longshot Winner, Michael Robinson
(Boston, MA) – Here is the first of three articles coming up on the Samuel Adams Longshot Series from Boston Beer Co. Two bottles from each winner will be included in the new six-pack coming out in April 2010. Boston Beer Co. founder, Jim Koch, generally selects three winners each year: one an employee of his own brewery and two others that are not affiliated. There were four finalists vying for those other two spots with the winners being named at the GABF in late September.
As luck would have it, there were at least two firsts this year. One has to Continue reading
Bell’s Bourbon Barrel-Aged Hell Hath No Fury on the way
[12/2 Update: The Beer Spot checked in with a Bell's rep who confirmed this would be draft-only and may eventually hit bottles but no guarantee.]
(Kalamazoo, MI) – Judging by the lack of label artwork, this will be exclusive to the General Store. Larry Bell indicated late last month that there would be no HHNF this year though he wasn’t telling the whole story. Bell’s Bourbon Barrel-Aged Hell Hath No Fury got label approval recently and will be bottled. Details are unknown about the bourbon-aged beer at this time but if any locals would like to chime in or act as street reporters here, the efforts are welcome.

[4/11 Update: Per Time Magazine, "Jim Watt, one of BrewDog's co-founders, says that some 400 bottles of Tactical Nuclear Penguin are in the process of being shipped to a few stores in California and New York City, including a Whole Foods location; about half of the consumers buying beer from the BrewDog website are from the U.S."]

[12/9 Update: 1st and 2nd batch of Tactical Nuclear Penguin sold out, third batch could be shipped to U.S. Stay tuned.]
[11/30 Update via BrewDog website: "*Due to unforeseen demand and interest in the beer, the initial bottling of Tactical Nuclear Penguin has now sold out. The good news however, is that the 2nd instalment is almost good to go. We will be bottling this batch on the 17th of December. If you place an order below, your order will be dispatched as soon as the beer is bottled. This will be in just over 2 weeks time. We will endeavour to do all we can to ensure a pre Christmas delivery but we cannot guarantee this. It is highly likely that the next bottling will be all sold out very soon also, so we recommend purchasing now to avoid disappointment*
*Everyone who bought before 1700 on 27th will receive their beers later next week*"]

Holiday stunner: Report says Long Trail Brewing to buy Otter Creek Brewing
[12/1 Update: Long Trail has signed a letter of intent to purchase Otter Creek according to reports from the Burlington Free Press and Rutland Herald. The articles cite updated estimates of barrel-production from what I cited (from the New Brewer): 76,000 barrels for Long Trail and 25,000 for Otter Creek. In addition, Long Trail is distributed in nine states and Otter Creek in fifteen according to the article. The numbers I cited were from an apparently outdated Wikipedia profile.]
(Middlebury, VT) – Two writers very well established in the craft beer space are reporting that Long Trail Brewing, #23 craft brewery in the country, is planning to purchase Otter Creek Brewing, #42 craft brewery in the country. Andy Crouch of BeerScribe.com first broke it late last night and Jay Brooks independently confirmed the report today. Update: Select Wines, Inc. Sales Representative and blogger, Thomas Cizauskas, (his employer distributes Otter Creek) says that the deal is expected to be completed by the end of December. Update #2: More local commentary from The Hopback and Blog About Beer.
While neither of these Vermont-based breweries may be household names nationwide today, if this purchase goes through, Long Trail is about to join an exclusive club of craft beer-makers. Particularly surprising about this is that Otter Creek is in the midst of a widespread branding reconstruction, one that includes a new logo, beer labels, and a brand-new beer slated for release at the end of the year.

Trademark follies: North Coast Brewing and De Molen go toe to toe over Rasputin
(Bodegraven, NETHERLANDS) – For whatever reason, trademark matters have come to the surface a lot recently; I can think of at least four disputes from the past month or so. There was the infamous Rock Art Brewery vs. Monster Energy battle, Moylan’s losing its Kilt Lifter name in some areas, Odell and Red Lodge squaring off, and now this. De Molen, imported by The Shelton Brothers, started sending their beer over to the States last year. One of those beers, De Molen Rasputin, has apparently struck a chord with well-known California-based North Coast Brewing.

Cascade Brewing: massive e-mail update
(Portland, OR) – Cascade Brewing may not be a household name yet outside of Oregon but it may be in the near-future. The brewery, who took home gold and silver medals at GABF and whose portfolio has earned mostly A’s on Beer Advocate, sent out an email update today with news about upcoming beers and expansion.

Mactarnahan’s Goose Bump, Humbug’r make their debut
(Portland, OR) – Mactarnahan’s Brewing launched a new beer over the weekend. Mactarnahan’s Goose Bump Imperial Stout is the brewery’s new winter seasonal appearing in 22 oz. bombers. According to Marketing Director, Mark Carver, it replaces Lip Stinger in the big bottle line-up. Less than 1,000 cases of this one have been produced so it is not expected to last past January. Look for it in Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Montana, Alaska, and Hawaii.
Bell’s Production Manager, John Mallett, talks Bell’s – De Proef Van Twee
Pretty sure this is an old video but with the beer just arriving in some stores recently, I thought it was quite relevant. Haven’t bought/seen the beer yet? You can see the Bell’s – De Proef Van Twee label from a post this past July.
