Shipyard Smashed Pumpkin debuts soon

shipyard-smashed-pumpkin(Portland, ME) – Shipyard Brewing Company announces the release of a new beer in its Pugsley’s Signature Series line. Smashed Pumpkin will be available in late August exclusively in 22 oz. bottles and on draft.

Smashed Pumpkin is a big-bodied beer with a light coppery orange color and pleasing aroma of pumpkin and nutmeg. The OG and final Alc./Vol. provide the structure and body. Pale Ale, Wheat and Light Munich Malts combine with the natural tannin in pumpkin and the delicate spiciness of Willamette and Hallertau Hops to balance the sweetness of the fruit. 1.088 OG, 9.00% Alc./Vol.

To fully enjoy all the flavors, this ale is best drunk at 55 degrees Fahrenheit. Smashed Pumpkin pairs well with sharp cheeses, nuts, lamb, hearty stews and desserts like flan or pumpkin pie. Chefs find this an excellent beer to cook with in dishes such as braised short ribs.

Instead of having an official release party for CO #2 we plan to just make it available at the brewery during normal business hours with a per person limit. There are about 450 bottles of batch #2.

Three Floyds Brewing video (circa early days) spotted

(Munster, IN) – The top brewery in the world according to the beer drinking republic at RateBeer, Three Floyds Brewing, is always in the spotlight every April when Dark Lord is released. It’s unusual to post about the brewery in late July but an interesting video surfaced in May. The brewery appeared on a show called “What’s on Tap” years ago (likely in 2000) featuring a very youthful Nick Floyd. Luckily, Hugbee from BeerMapping.com found it. Not exactly news but then again, there is a lot that I post here that deviates from “new beer news.”

What’s new at New Glarus Brewing

newglarus(New Glarus, WI) – New Glarus Brewing has kept busy this summer; front-man, Dan Carey, posted an update for RateBeer folks a couple weeks ago:

“(1) Golden Ale [R&D Series beer #1] is in fact for sale now in our Gift Shop only. It’s an ale fermented with Brett Yeast and made with Maris Otter Malt and Styrian Golding Hops. I really hope you all like it! Why $8 for a 500 ml bottle? Those of you that know us know that we strive to be really fair with our pricing so I hope you understand …. the 500 ml Euro Bottles are expensive plus the beer was really difficult to make. We devoted a great deal of time to making it. Really a labor of love

(2) We did in fact make 160 bbls of it so don’t stress about it running out soon. Please come by for a visit when you can.

(3) Next in the Unplugged Series is an “Old English Porter“. It’s based Continue reading

Everyone remembers the “I am a Craft Brewer” video that was part of Greg Koch’s keynote speech at this year’s Craft Brewers Conference. A group of homebrewers made their own video modeled after it and the video started circulating recently. Given the recent poll here that there are a lot of homebrewers out there checking in, this one’s for you!
