Great Divide Claymore Scotch Ale, Espresso Oak Aged Yeti Imperial Stout arrive Feb. 13

espresso-oa-yeti claymore-scotch-aleTwo new beers lead the 2009 lineup of seasonal releases

On February 13, 2009, Great Divide Brewing Company, one of America’s most acclaimed craft breweries, will release Claymore Scotch Ale and Espresso Oak Aged Yeti Imperial Stout as the first offerings in a new lineup of rotating seasonal releases.

Named for a medieval Scottish sword, Claymore Scotch Ale is a tribute to the legendary “Wee Heavy” beers of Scotland. A malty, deep-ruby-hued ale, it features a generous amount of caramel sweetness, a reserved hop profile and a subtle warming character, at 7.7% alcohol by volume. Claymore will be available in six-packs and on draft through mid-April.

“We still love hops, but we wanted to brew a more malt-forward beer for a change,” says Great Divide founder and president Brian Dunn. “And since it’s still winter, it made sense to brew something with a bit of warming alcohol character. Wee Heavy is sort of an underappreciated —not to mention delicious—style, so we decided that it would be the perfect fit. We’re excited,” he concludes. “It’ll stand up to the best of them.”

BEER Act provides relief to American Brewers

Beer Institute and Brewers Association Applaud Introduction of Bipartisan Tax Relief Legislation for Brewers

Bill repeals doubling of 1991 excise tax and provides additional economic relief to small brewers

Washington, DC- The Beer Institute and the Brewers Association today applauded members of the United States House of Representatives for the introduction of H.R. 836 the Brewers Excise and Economic Relief (BEER) Act, which effectively returns the federal beer excise tax back to its pre-1991 level of $9 per barrel.

“There is strong, industry-wide support for this legislation, and we thank Congress for its bipartisan effort to institute tax fairness for one of the most productive sectors of the American economy,” said Tom Long, President and Chief Commercial Officer of MillerCoors, and Chairman of the Beer Institute. “We commend Reps. Earl Pomeroy (D-ND) and Tom Latham (R-IA) for their leadership on this important issue, and we urge Congress to help provide relief to low- and middle-income families and businesses in America’s brewing community by passing this legislation as quickly as possible.”

[2/11 Update: Bill Brand now in stable condition though not out of the woods]

[2/10 Update: Bill Brand was seriously injured late Sunday night when he was a struck by a train in San Francisco. Jay from the Brookston Beer Bulletin, and a close friend of Bill's, wrote that he was in a coma yesterday but I haven't seen any updates since. Watch Bill's blog for updates on his status. Over 200 people have left comments on Twitter and his blog wishing for a speedy recovery showing the impact he has left on the beer community. While I have never met him, I have followed his work for several months. It is no stretch by any means to say that Bill sets the bar for all of us beer bloggers and we all pray that he pulls through this.]

Pannepot Cafe opens in June, Cuvee Delphine delayed

pannepot-cafe

I first wrote about The Pannepot Cafe last spring (along with the revelation that Struise would bottle Black Albert). Both the cafe and the beer were delayed for some time with the Cafe project seemingly disappearing altogether. But after remaining silent about the Cafe for much of the past year, Struise finally released word on its website this past week that it will finally open this June. The brewery is only revealing that it will be in Maine though the location is really not a secret (it’s very easy to dig it up but I will leave it at that for now).
