Alaskan Brewing to release Baltic Porter
Alaskan Baltic Porter could be the brewery’s first brand-new bottle release since Alaskan IPA (haven’t fact-checked that 100% yet) early last year. I only found a handful of reviews for this beer; it doesn’t appear to have hit any major festivals yet. Alaskan Barley Wine aka Big Nugget is the only big beer in the existing lineup and its critical success over the years in competitions like GABF is well-documented. The brewery won a gold medal along with three silvers at the recent GABF. The Smoked Porter took two of those awards, a record 16th and 17th, since the competition went to the new judging format. The new Baltic Porter will have a lot to live up to…

D.L. Geary Brewing Co. to bring back Imperial IPA, Wee Heavy
As the Maine’s newspapers and airwaves continue to be a battle ground for Question 1 lobbyists from both sides, a number of new beers are being released in Maine soon. [ed: Question 1, if passed will veto recently imposed taxes on sales of beer and other beverages to help fund a state health program. Yes: Fed Up with Taxes | No: Health Coverage Maine ] D.L. Geary Brewing will bring back two previous limited release beers.
Geary’s Imperial IPA and Wee Heavy Scottish Ale (pic below) will make their return after a two-year plus absence. Both beers Continue reading
Tyranena to bring back The Devil Made Me Do It!, Cherry Tart coming?
(Lake Mills, WI) – Tyranena Brewing announced in yesterday’s newsletter that The Devil Made Me Do It! Coffee Imperial Oatmeal Porter will return. Three batches were brewed this week. The beer has previously been released as part of the Brewers Gone Wild! Series and is currently ranked as the brewery’s #3 beer at both Beer Advocate and RateBeer.
Also from the newsletter, “We just received our shipment of a couple hundred pounds of tart red cherries. Now to see when we can fit it into the brewing schedule… and how far off we are in guessing how many pounds to use in a 23 barrel batch. Sometimes I think it would be nice to be able to brew a pilot batch… but where’s the fun in that?” 23 barrels makes me think this will be a future Brewers Gone Wild! Series release. Hopefully they are getting some tips from nearby New Glarus Brewing who have mastered two fruit beers of their own.
More on their search for a new brewer and other things in the full newsletter.
Firestone Walker Twelve (XII) Update
Official word from the brewery last night:
“XII is scheduled to be released on Saturday, November 8th at noon at the Firestone Walker Brewery in Paso Robles. It will be available the following weeks throughout California in limited amounts at select accounts.
Aside from the release on the 8th at the brewery, Brewmaster Matt Brynildson will be featuring a special cask pouring of the pale ale recipe he made at Marton’s in the UK for J.D. Wetherspoon’s International Beer Festival. This beer will be fresh from the UK. Other special beers will be available as well from the Quercus Alba blended, barrel-aged program. More to come.
Due to the limited amount of XII available, only 1 case per customer will be available for purchase to insure that everyone has a chance to purchase some. The price per 22oz bottle will be $19.99 plus tax. XII will be available as long as supplies last. First come, first served.”

From the Russian River Brewing website, as expected, there is confirmation that the next barrel-aged bottles to be sold will be a third batch of Beatification, blended from two batches brewed on 6/2007 and 2/2008. This batch will be “less sour” than the second.

(Cincinnati, OH) – Following up on my initial report on the brewery’s Mild Ale, Listermann Brewing Supply recently got federal label approval for a cream ale and an imperial malt liquor. According to Owner/Brewmaster, Dan Listermann, the “#42 Cream Ale (see pic below) is finishing fermentation now and will be out when the state approves the label – hopefully shortly.” The 186,000 MPS Malt Liquor will be brewed when the second fermenter comes on line and is projected to be around 10.5%. [10/23 Update: Fox News Video on this year's edition
Great photoblog w/ video on the bottling]
(Brooklyn Center, MN) – Surly Darkness will be released less than one week from today at the brewery. Beer ratings currently have it in the top 10 at both Beer Advocate and RateBeer. People are still coming out of GABF mode but I expect the Darkness chatter to pick up this week. Full event details are posted at the Surly site.
And don’t forget about the Darkness Eve party at Stub n Herb’s.
Local artist, Nic Skrade, is responsible for this year’s label. Nic keeps a blog featuring some of his artwork, and more shots of his tattoo work can be found at the Uptown Tattoo site.
Dieu du Ciel may change plans for new U.S. beers
{Update 12/13: Solstice d Hiver made it after all! Now available in some stores around the country]
[Update to this original Dieu du Ciel article]
(St. Jerome, QUEBEC) – Tough breaks happen from time to time, especially in the case of small artisanal brewers. Dieu du Ciel had planned to import two new beers to the U.S. this year, Rigor Mortis Abt and Solstice d’hiver, with the possibility of a third and fourth, Equinoxe du Printemps (Maple Scotch Ale) and Blanche Neige (Witbier), coming next year. These plans are now up in the air, however, with news that the batch of Solstice d Hiver planned for the U.S. experienced bottling issues and will no longer be coming. President, Stéphane Ostiguy, said that the brewery will re-focus its efforts on making sure that output of the regular lineup of beers is high enough to keep up with existing demand. More details below from Ostiguy…
River Horse Double Wit redux, Oatmeal Milk Stout coming soon
Liquor Max: Thomas Hardy’s 1994, WLV Liquors: Founders Backwoods Bastard?
![]()
Liquor Max still has Thomas Hardy’s Ale 1994 on sale from Friday. 2 bottle limit per person.
West Lakeview Liquors updated their site recently and have Founders Breakfast Stout, Founders Harvest Ale, and Three Floyds Dreadnaught, among others listed as for sale through their new online ordering system. There is a very limited list of beers available through the new system though I assume that people can still do manual orders (by email and phone) if they want stuff not listed.
This is important because Founders Backwoods Bastard was spotted there yesterday!
I will be providing more WLV Liquors updates from here on out because of their redone New Arrivals page.
Lastly, Archer Liquors got in more of the following beers late last week:
Dogfish 90 Minute IPA
Southern Tier Unearthly IPA
Founder’s Dirty Bastard
Founder’s Curmudgeon
Founder’s Centennial IPA
Nils Oscar to ship Rokporter, Coffee Stout (Rwanda Gatsinga) to U.S.
From Matt Dinges of the Shelton Bros: “Two new beers are on the way from Nils Oscar in Sweden: Smoked Porter in 50cl bottles (won a medal at the last world beer championship in San Diego) and Coffee Stout, which is made with fair trade, single estate coffee from Rwanda. Smoked Porter should be available year round from here on out. Coffee Stout, at this point, is a one off specialty batch. We were lucky to get any of it, label modifications came down to the 11th hour.”
One of the beers Matt mentioned there just got federal label approval this week. Nils Oscar Rokporter is a smoked beer that features Fuggles Continue reading
Liquid Solutions gets more Pliny the Elder, Blind Pig
![]()
Not to beat a dead horse with the Pliny and Blind Pig updates but as far as I can tell, it is still the most popular beer (or close to it). Another round of Russian River Pliny the Elder and Blind Pig seems to be hitting the circuit and Liquid Solutions is the next stop. No posted limit as far I can tell and both are definitely still in stock as of tonight.

Bridgeport Brewing will release Raven Mad Imperial Porter on October 23. From the press release: “Aged in bourbon and pinot noir barrels, this brew conjures a unique blend of roasted malts, hints of vanilla and subtle oak flavors.” The 7.3%/50 IBU porter also has some Continue reading
